NIGERIANS VIEW: NOT TOO YOUNG TO RUN

By Ubani Chidinma (HNMC/17/045)

Around the world, the generation of young people is the largest and yet a huge percentage of countries restrict young people from running for political office even though they can vote despite half of the global population been under 30.

In Nigeria, so as to address the issue of age discrimination in candidacy for the legislative and executive branches, and also serve as inspiration for the global awareness, the youths embarked on what can be referred to as the #NotTooYoungToRun campaign.

Following the Nigerians clamour on the campaign, the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth has initiated a campaign partnership with a couple of youth association and forums, so as to provide young people with a central platform through which to advocate.

Mixed reactions have over time trailed the passage of the bill into law signed by President Muhammadu Buhari on May 30, 2018.

As some are of the view that it is a good move, others clearly stated that the clause attached is not worth it.

The clause which notes that "Nigerian youths should not be involved in 2019 despite the bill passage but come out in mass for the subsequent elections".

As life is often said not to be a bed of rose, residents of Osaye area of Ogba, Lagos state have cried out over the looming environmental disaster in the area.

To some in Osaye area of Ogba, the Ojodu Local Government Area of Lagos state, life is definitely not palatable owing to the looming environmental disaster and health hazards in the area.

This development has now exposed residents to danger and other health hazards. To access the swampy area, residents meander through swampy hills with not less than 48 steps while the canal is currently not less than 12 fits wide and still expanding, as the environmental meanace garners momentum.

A tenant, Olarewaju Lawal, complained they battle with erosion each time it rains due to the unstoppable expansion of the canal. ”We seriously need help in this area because this canal is expanding on a daily basis especially in the rainy season and the canal is consuming houses,” he lamented.

Lawal said that efforts have been made in the past but the constrained by lack of funds.

”Our efforts are limited to what to do because maintaining the canal is expensive and I feel if the landlords have money, they wouldn’t have built in this area in the first place''

Imagine this scenario playing out in your community where drainage systems which are directly connected to toilet pipes are located ahead your building, Lawal complained.

The residents also expressed their helplessness over the incessant air pollution within the community. Olumide Tosin, another resident also expressed her anger at the intensity of pollution in the area. ”It is very critical to state that resident also in this area misuse the canal here; and the government really needs to come in here to enforce discipline in this area.

”The canal here is now filled with wastes, human feces and no one is bold enough to call any one to question and there are kids playing around,” he said.

The residents however, called on the Lagos state government to rescue them from the impending hazards.

The state of the environmental hazard in the area has gone worst such that the cases of minors recorded have continued to increase on a daily basis

“I keep asking if this school is very safe security-wise?, as the unstoppable stealing of things among the students cannot be underestimated despite the amount of fees paid, does it mean that we cannot be secured in this institution?,” this were the questions raised from the interviews with students, reacting to the security state of the first Premier Monotechnic in Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba Lagos.

With the unexpected and untraceable misplacements and stealing of mobile phones, laptops, bags, not excluding academic materials amongst others in the school premises, have placed paramount and tantamount questions on the lips of students of the institution, raising doubts on the safety of the school.
